The Sony Online Entertainment booth had a lot to see. One of the games featured was The Agency, an online action shooter. Dubbed as an MMO Action Shooter, the focus of the game is all about living the life of a spy. You can choose from two different “sides”: U.N.I.T.E, who are like the James Bond type of spy – sophisticated with access to cutting edge tech; and ParaGON, who are mercenaries.
The game is primarily a shooter in nature but also has elements of an MMO as you will be involved in PvP gameplay. The leveling up system is being tweaked a bit so that a high level player can’t always dominate a lower level player. The game has something to offer every player from stealth action to all out assaults. No waiting for rounds as players can jump right into combat or advance in their ranks in the story missions.
You have access to five different roles: Recon, Commander, Assault, Suppressor, and Gadgeteer. Each role has different skills and weapon sets and will even be dressed differently to reflect that. You can switch roles on the fly and you can have teams consisting of any combination of roles.
The gameplay really consists of PvP play with the amount of players determined by the map. There are also missions available for up to four players.
I spent a good amount of time playing the game. Oddly enough, I happened to get placed at the only station WITHOUT a PS3 controller so I was stuck playing with the mouse and WASD! I am NOT a PC gamer so I had a little bit of trouble at first. It took a little while before I got used to the controls, but once I did, I was taking out my share of people! I learned very quickly which roles worked best for my play style but tried each one for a while. Since you can choose your role on the fly, you can always switch depending on your situation. Be careful though, you may change roles and still expect to have skills from your previous one! When you die, you are can either commit suicide so you can respawn or you can wait to be revived by one of your teammates.
The game has no set release date as they are working hard to make the game a better shooter. Since there are so many great online shooters out there, the game definitely has to set itself apart. From what I played, the game is a lot of fun to play and controls well (as well as a console gamer can expect from a PC game!). The spy and leveling up aspects as well as the gameplay and maps are what will set this game apart from its competition.
The Agency will be released on the PC and the PS3. No release date has been announced.
