Fish Tank is a downloadable PS3/PSP minis game by developer iFun4All, who claims to be the worst game developer in the world and whose ultimate goal is to create the worst game ever made. I am sad to say that they have not yet made their goal. Fish Tank, while not the greatest game of all time, definitely has some fun and addictive qualities.

This was my first PSP minis game. I played it for a while on the PS3 and then transferred it to my PSP. It’s definitely more suited for a handheld system and iFun4All obviously knew this as the game is coming soon to the iPhone and iPad.

Fish Tank is a Match 3 type of puzzle game that borrows heavily from Tetris and Bejeweled. It is set underwater, in a Fish Tank (duh), and its game board is set up horizontally with the game pieces (fish) coming from left to right towards rows and columns of bubbles. As they reach the right side, they become encased in a bubble and can only disappear when 4 or more fish of the same color are lined up. You can control which bubble row you what a particular fish to go with the D-Pad. When 4 or more fish are lined up, a button icon appears and you must press the corresponding button to make the cluster of fish disappear. You can speed up the fish with the R button and you can activate power ups with the L button.

The game is pretty straightforward although, I had a bit of a tough time with it my first time through. Once I read the directions and got used to its horizontal set-up, I was kinda hooked. The game features Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulties and each level will vary in the number of colored fish available. You have a time limit and a mistake limit and when either of these are up, the game is over. There is also a Challenge Mode with 24 sets of various challenging “puzzles”, each with its unique level handicap.

Fish Tank also features Trophies on the PS3 and Achievements for the PSP. There is no multiplayer in either the PS3 or the PSP versions but that doesn’t hurts its overall value; it’s definitely a single player experience.

The graphics aren’t the greatest and on an HD TV with the PS3, it is quite apparent with the jaggy lines. It looks far better on the PSP, as to be expected. The music is annoying but catchy as I am humming it in my (can’t get it out of my) head right now. Once you get into it, it’s a fun and addicting game. If you enjoy these types of puzzle games, you may very well enjoy Fish Tank. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you may want to hold out until those versions come out.

Fish Tank is available now on PSN for the PS3 and can also be downloaded onto a Sony MemoryStick and played on the PSP. The iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon.

The Tomb Raider Trilogy has brought Lara Croft full circle as she returns, once again, to the PS3. This time, PS3 owners get to play Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary, both titles which were previously unreleased on Sony’s next-gen console. This trilogy pack is rounded out by the last disc based game, Tomb Raider Underworld.

It’s great to see all three titles on one disc and at such a great price, $39.99. In addition to the games, the disc also comes loaded with a premium Tomb Raider theme for the XMB dashboard, avatars for PlayStation Home, and 30 minutes of bonus videos for all three games. All of the videos are Developer’s Diaries and are all available online, but it is nice to have them all in one place.

All three games remain unchanged, although Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary have both been remastered for HD resolution. The disc info states that the available resolutions go up to 720p while the Xbox 360 versions (except Legend) are all available up to 1080p. Not quite sure how this qualifies for a “remastered in HD” but all three games look good on the PS3. (I did a quick side by side comparison between the 360 versions and the PS3 versions and I found the 360′s graphics to be slightly superior.)

A few drawbacks in this collection are the absence of the two downloadable Underworld episodes, Lara’s Shadow and Beneath the Ashes, as well as the the PSN title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. The DLC episodes were both Xbox exclusives and may never see the light on the PS3. The inclusion of Guardian of Light would have been a nice addition but it is understandable why it was not included. However, two Guardian of Light trailers are included in the bonus video content.

Trophies are included for all three titles and are split out per game as opposed to being listed under “The Tomb Raider Trilogy”. Trophies unlocked for the regular retail version of Underworld will be unlocked for the Trilogy as well. Although Trophies are “shared”, you cannot load game saves for Underworld in the Trilogy and vice versa. Those are stored as completely separated game data and noted as Tomb Raider Trilogy saves.

While the Trilogy disc is a slight disappointment for me, I can’t help but still recommend it. This collection features three excellent Tomb Raider titles and is a great deal for the $39.99 price tag. Fans of the series probably own all of the games but the debut of Legend and Anniversary on the PS3 will have some great appeal to fans with only a PS3 only. Die hard fans of the franchise may get it to add it to the collection as well as for the bonus footage and items on the disc.

The Tomb Raider Trilogy is rated T for Teen and is available now for $39.99 exclusively for the PS3.

A review copy of the game was provided but did not affect the outcome of this review.

Acceleration of Suguri X Edition is what you would get when you mix a fighting game with a 2D side-scrolling shooter game like Bangai-O Spirits or Gradius. AoSXE features seven (and a few unlockables) little anime-style robot girls who fight to save the world and fight each other over pudding. Yes, pudding. The game features an Arcade Mode as well as a versus mode, where you can play locally with another player, vs the CPU, or in the practice mode. There is no online multiplayer mode.

Within the Arcade Mode are two menu items called Falling Wonder and Pudding Deity. These play out similar to the Arcade mode but features a story, if you can call it that, as well as a boss battle at the end. With the game featuring cute little Anime girls, I was disappointed to see that the story mode did not feature animation but instead was a text based dialog between characters. The stories were quite lengthy and didn’t make a whole lot of sense either. I tried to read through it but I ended up just skipping past most of it, speed reading it along the way. The story, as with most fighting games, has no bearing on the gameplay before you so it’s purely up to the player how into the game they want to get.

The battle system was very simple, no complicated combos to learn or pull off. I think that it is nice to have simple controls since fighting games as of late have become super ultra complicated. However, this seemed to work against AoSXE. I found that, in most cases, the control was consistently inconsistent no matter what character I would choose. I could just find that one attack that worked against my opponent and literally just button mash the heck out of it and win. Other times, nothing seemed to work and I would get my butt kicked, continue the match, and then annihilate my opponent. The characters themselves were not very balanced either. Some felt a lot more powerful than others.

Despite the game’s simple control scheme, there was no training or tutorial, just the button config in the options menu and a lame practice mode. In Practice mode, the CPU does nothing so it’s a good place to try out new characters and learn what their attacks are. For me, this worked a little bit but I had the same experience whether I knew the moves or not. (OK, I did a little better after knowing what button did what). (Note: As I was writing this review, I discovered that a week or so after the game’s release, a downloadable game manual was added to the media section of the game’s official website. This manual explains a lot about the game.)

The gameplay itself can only be described as frantic and confusing. The two fighters battle it out within a circular boundary before some rather nicely rendered background locations. You fly about the screen and the camera uses a zoom in/out style, much like Super Smash Brothers Melee. The characters are tiny in comparison to the screen and, even when zoomed in all the way, are barely recognizable. With missiles and other projectiles all over the screen paired with several elaborate special attacks involving huge lasers, chains, electric fields, and ice, you can lose sight of exactly which character you are playing and where you are on the screen.

The local co-op has its fun moments but it isn’t a game you can necessarily pick up and play nor is it a game that makes you want to learn how to pull off the moves (because it has none). Norm and I played through a few fights but since he hadn’t played the game prior to that, I was button mashing him to death with the same attack that it just got old for both of us. There is no online multiplayer support for AoSXE and I think that hurts the game’s replay value.

The music is the best thing that the game really had to offer. A bumpin’ and upbeat techno soundtrack fit well within the look and feel of the game. I liked the music so much, it made me want to pick up some glow sticks and get my rave on! I have left the game on the menu or in practice mode just to have the music on in the background. Side note: Your PS3 controller automatically turns itself off after so long which will suspend the game (and the music) until the controller is reconnected. You can also stream the tracks on the official Suguri website.

Another nice feature of the game is the ability to save replays of matches and then upload them to YouTube. You will need a YouTube account, and of course, Internet access for this to work, but most people probably have both these days.

While I was not the game’s biggest fan, I did play through it several times and, while inconsistent, I was always pleased when I won a battle especially if I had lost the first time through. I think the game does have its audience within the fighting game genre and with fans of doujin. Practice makes perfect and I think that if the player is willing to invest the time into each character that may boost the game’s replay value. Unless you love fighting games of all kind or are just a fan of quirky and strange Japanese doujin-style games, Acceleration of Sugeri X Edition may not be the game for you.

Acceleration of Suguri X Edition is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and up and is available now for $5.99, exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

Blue Toad Murder Files is an episodic murder mystery game that was originally released episodically earlier this year on the PS3. On November 24th, the game was released as a “virtual box set” on PC featuring all 6 episodes.

Your mystery begins in the small, quaint town of Little Riddle when the Mayor is murdered. Good thing you are a part of the Blue Toad Detective Agency! The game is broken down into a series of cutscenes, puzzles, quizzes, and a Whodunnit round (where you guess who the culprit of the episode is). During the episode, you will be given clues to help solve the mystery as well as different and challenging puzzles to solve that will move you through the town of Little Riddle – helping villagers and getting clues. The puzzles are mainly logic, math, and other problem solving puzzles some of which may require the help of a pen and paper to solve.

There are 12 puzzles per level as well as quizzes given throughout just “to see if you were listening”. Most of the questions can be answered by simply paying attention to the cutscenes but be sure to listen AND watch as some questions will be asked about things you saw during the cutscenes. If you get one of the four questions wrong, you are deemed a Loser…so make sure to pay attention! You can still fail all the quizzes and puzzles and win the game by guessing correctly in the Whodunnit round.

As you get clues, you will be able to visit key places in Little Riddle by simply selecting it on the map. The order you choose the location can possibly affect what you see and hear so choose wisely. As you investigate each lead, you will have to solve a puzzle to either help the villager you just interrogated with a task or to get more clues out of them.

Each puzzle has a Gold Award Time which will award you a gold medal if you correctly solve the puzzle within that time frame. If you guess wrong, you can try again but you will not be able to get the gold medal, only the silver or the bronze. More than two incorrect answers and there will be no medal. You can try as many times as you want as there is no time limit. If you choose to give up, you will get the answer, along with a detailed explanation of the answer (if needed).

Each scene is replayable if you think you missed anything and in general, solving the puzzles doesn’t affect the actual the outcome of the game for as long as you guess the correct culprit, you are deemed the winner. At the end of the episode, your medal score is tallied up in a meter but that was it.

The game can be played solo or in co-operative multiplayer locally with up to 4 people. Nothing changes except you alternate puzzles and quiz questions. You can opt to help each other with the puzzles or not, but in the end, you are all on the same team so it makes more sense to help each other out.

Graphically, the game looks great. They really paid attention to the smallest of details which is especially important in a mystery type of game where all the details are important. The town of Little Riddle looks almost as real as a town seen in a model railroad and really gives you a great sense of the town. The voice acting is top notch and is reminiscent of old radio dramas where it is about as much fun to just listen to it as it is to watch it.

It should be noted that Little Riddle takes place in the UK and is also developed and published by Relentless Software, a UK company. This is important since the units of measure are using the metric system and the money is listed in pounds. This is mostly for American gamers who are probably less familiar with meters and liters as we are with inches and gallons.

All of the episodes end with a grand cliffhanger, making me glad I had all the episodes on hand. I would say that the game is best enjoyed by playing all of the episodes, however, the gameplay stays the same throughout all episodes so if you aren’t sure if you will like the game, you should try it out with the first episode. The game is a lot of fun and will either make you happy at how smart you are when it comes with puzzle solving or you will feel incredibly stupid if you have had a hard time with the puzzles. There is little to moderate replay value as once you complete an episode you can go back and play the puzzles again as well as watch all of the cutscenes. There is nothing to gain other than your own satisfaction of solving the puzzles and getting gold medals for all of them. (The trophy is only unlocked by getting all gold medals in the story mode only). While it can be a fun game to play with others, that just depends on the group. The game is slow-paced and requires most of your attention. Each episode can take you anywhere between 1-3 hours to complete and that just depends on how long the puzzles take you and how many times you opt to try to solve them. If you like logic and math puzzles wrapped up in a mystery package, this is a great game for you. Having the puzzles wrapped into a pretty decent story line made me keep coming back for more.

Blue Toad Murder Files is rated E 10+ for Everyone 10 years old and up and is available now on the PSN for $26.99 for all 6 episodes and for the PC for $19.99 for all 6 episodes.

MySims SkyHeroes is the sixth installment in the MySims series where you start out as an unknown pilot and work your way up the ranks fighting enemies in aerial dogfight battles, racing challenges, and boss challenges that will test your skills as a pilot.

With SkyHeroes, you are able to customize your character from the ground up starting with gender to facial features to the voice. There are a lot of options in each category so you will definitely spend a lot of time with character customization, at least in the beginning. You can go back and edit your sim as you progress through the game.

You can also upgrade your aircraft. As you progress through the game, you will unlock pieces that you can use to upgrade your existing aircraft or build new ones. You can have a plane that you use for racing and one that you use for dogfighting and you can fine tune each aircraft by switching out parts and even painting your plane to help camouflage it. You are armed with a machine gun and a missile launcher on your plane as well as several pick ups found in most of the levels.

The game features a Story Mode as well as Quickplay and Multiplayer Modes. In Story Mode, the game takes you through each challenge and through the underlying story. You take on several little challenges like dogfights or races, all of which will lead up to more grand battles that will feature a little of both.

In Quickplay, you can choose to Race or Dogfight. Within each, you can choose Free-For-All or Team Battles. Once you have determined the kind of game, you can choose all the options like how many laps or AI you want in the game as well as the time limit and whether you want to turn on/off pick ups, missiles, and/or your machine guns. You can choose to play the game locally in splitscreen co-op or you can go online for 10-player action.

The game controls rather well and offers a variety of controller configurations. Even though I don’t like the inverted Y axis, I found it to be the best configuration for me. Some of the challenges felt way more difficult than they should’ve been, some missions taking several tries to pass. I admit, flight games are not my forte but I doubt a 10 year old could’ve done that much better which may make the game a little frustrating to some. You can crash into buildings and such without dying but there are other things that will harm you so there is a little trial and error on your part to see what you can get away with. The game moves rather fast and you will find enemies flying past you while you are trying to find them. There is a radar system with your plane’s reticle in the middle of the screen and a series of green or red arrows that are more confusing than helpful until you get used to it.

The graphics fit the MySims style and made a nice backdrop for the story. The levels were pretty small as I hit the out of bounds territory rather often. The game would warn you that you were out of bounds but the opponents could be found further out of bounds so I’m not sure where that balances out.

My biggest issue with the game was the annoying gibberish that the Sims use to speak. Honestly, I had no idea what the story entailed as they use the most annoying gibberish to replace talking. It was so obnoxious and annoying, I tried to cycle as quickly through the dialogs as possible. Sadly, I couldn’t find anything in the options menu that would mute the horrible voices so I was stuck with quickly going through the dialog portions. I’m also pretty new to the franchise – not only have I never played a MySims game, but I have never played a Sims game. The gibberish voices is enough to keep me away.

Overall, MySims SkyHeroes is a decent flight game and fans of the MySims franchise or the Sims franchise may thoroughly enjoy the game. This game is obviously aimed at kids but parents may be more interested in Kid Adventures Sky Captain for the Nintendo Wii which was a lot easier to control and had more dynamic challenges. Kid Adventures lacks the character customization of SkyHeroes as well as a brand name like MySims but may be more age appropriate especially for the younger crowd and for parents looking for something a little less aggressive than SkyHeroes.

MySims SkyHeroes is rated E 10 + for Everyone 10 years and older and is available for the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360.

Kick-Ass New and Improved is a PlayStation Network downloadable beat 'em up RPG. This is a new and improved version of the game that was released back in April. Those that purchased the previously released version can update it with this version for free.

In a world filled with super heroes with super powers, it’s nice to see a comic/movie/game like Kick-Ass. It’s basically the story of a normal guy who is standing up for himself in an extraordinary way. Barring the fact that his first ass kicking rendered him with a bunch of severed nerve endings making the feeling of physical pain a thing of the past. So OK, he has some special powers, but not in the conventional super hero way.

Kick-Ass New & Improved is a PlayStation Network downloadable beat ‘em up RPG. This is a new and improved version of the game that was released back in April 2010. Those that purchased the previously released version can update it with this version for free. New enemies and levels were added to this version as well as extra moves and missions. Other enhancements like AI balancing and improved sound and trophies were also added. I did not play the previous version so this review is based solely on this new and improved version.

The game is played with a semi-top down view and is really a lot of button mashing to kill thug after thug. You have your light and your heavy attacks along with some Special Abilities. You can level up your character as you earn experience which is earned by killing enemies and busting items found in the levels.

The game is presented in a cell-shaded style with actual cutscenes from the movie which is fitting for a game based on a comic book/graphic novel. The voice acting is decent as well although some of the lines get repeated a bit much. However, there is nothing greater than Hit Girl spouting out obscenities like she’s an adult.

Events are pretty much the same as the film but there is little to no story introduced so the game does assume that you have either read the comic or have seen the movie. I hadn’t seen the movie or read the comic book before I played the game so some of the game didn’t make a lot of sense but it didn’t really ruin it for me. In fact, it was kinda cool to watch the movie and see how well they were able to recreate some of the scenes and environments from the film. Apart from that, it wasn’t that impressive.

You can play the game as Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, or Big Daddy and you can also play along with another character in local co-op. I didn’t realize how much harder the game got as you went along until I started up the third level with Norm and I was level 10 and he was level 1. We ended up having to start the game all over again so that he could level up his character. The controls are a little wonky and sometimes the camera will position itself so you can’t see anything at all so you end up fighting the camera control a bit. It’s quite a bit worse in the local co-op. If one of you should die during the game, you can revive the other player by holding the circle button down for a few seconds as their life meter goes up. This is pretty difficult with a bunch of thugs on you so generally, you are left to fend for yourself. If you do survive, then you can revive the other player. If you don’t, you restart from the next checkpoint. It’s pretty particular as to where you stand so sometimes it’ll take you a few tries to get the revive meter going.

The game does have an autosave feature but sometimes it doesn’t save the game for quite a while so you may find yourself restarting levels as the game progresses. It’s not necessary to play the game with another person, but it sure does help things. It was hard to tell if the game’s difficulty was upped by the fact that there were two players instead of one.

The game’s AI isn’t anything to write home about. Thugs are triggered basically by invisible checkpoints so if you have a ranged weapon like Hit Girl’s guns, you can stop a little before that happens and get a head start on their health meters. Once you hit them, they do come running – and from all directions too. Sometimes, you will find groups of thugs all running into each other or running into walls. You can also kill by using the environment around you like power boxes, fuel barrels, and fork lifts. So there is a small level of experimentation to see what works best. I have found that as long as you keep moving and get a good hold on your jump/slam attack, you can almost survive everything.

There isn’t a ton of variety in the gameplay, it really is a button-mashing beat ‘em up. Leveling up is done in the pause menu by accessing your FaceSpace profile. It should be noted that the film was all about MySpace with no mention of Facebook, but for some reason the game went with the hybrid name. Not sure why and I guess it doesn’t really matter, I just found it worth noting. For a little added spice, there are pickups in the game including lost comic book covers that you can collect to view in the gallery later. If you can collect all 8 covers, you can read the entire first issue of the Kick-Ass comic. The game holds a moderate replay value if you are interested in playing the game using all three characters and if you want to play the game with friends. If you complete the game, which will you take you about 4-8 hours depending on your skill and if you played it in co-op or not, you will unlock Extreme mode and The Arena Mode. Extreme Mode is the game on a higher difficulty setting which is a lot like playing the later levels of the game as you are probably at about level 20-25 by this point. The Arena Mode is a survival mode where you must survive waves of enemies.

The game has its fun moments but has just about as many frustrating ones. It’s definitely a lot more fun with a friend than playing alone. The good thing is that as you play each character, they will keep the levels they have earned thus far. Just like the movie, Kick-Ass New & Improved holds nothing back and features all the blood and guts, profanity and spunk as it’s celluloid counterpart. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t quite live up to its name.

Kick-Ass New and Improved is rated M for Mature and is available now on the PlayStation Network for $9.99.

Review of Disney Sing It: Party Hits.

Disney Sing It: Party Hits is the latest installment in the Disney karaoke game series for the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 3. Party Hits features 30 pop hits from the Jonas Brothers, Justin Beiber, Demi Lovato, Camp Rock 2, along with a handful of other popular pop and Disney artists. Fans of these artists will have a blast singing some of their favorite songs whether they sing alone, with a friend, or a group of friends. You sing along while the song’s video plays in the background.

Now, I’ve played pretty much every karaoke video game on the market (US market, anyways) from the PS2 versions of Karaoke Revolution to Lips, SingStar, and of course, Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Funny enough, I had never tried the Disney Sing It series. There are two main modes to play – Sing It (solo) and Party Play (1-8 players). There is also a Vocal Coach trainer featuring Demi Lovato as your vocal coach. You can view your trophy status in Trophies, view the high scores in High Score, change the game options in the Options menu, and access the online store and worldwide Leaderboards in the Online Play menu. It should be noted that there is no online multiplayer featured in this game. The game comes bundled with one USB mic and will work with any USB mic you have from other games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero.

Surprisingly, the Vocal Coach mode has some pretty decent pointers and is a great place for beginners to start. Demi goes through proper posture and breathing to riffs and power singing. If you have never played a karaoke style video game, this will get you up to speed by the time you finish the training. You can go back to it at any time and it serves as a nice little warm up before you start. The Vocal Coach is only good for one player at a time so if you have friends over, you will have to run through the training separate for accurate scoring. I had a friend over to help me review the game since I really didn’t know any of the songs featured on the disc! Our only issue with the Vocal Coach was that is was a little confusing as to when we were supposed to come in and since we didn’t know what Demi was singing, it was hard to follow along. To fully take advantage of the Vocal Coach, you will need to do it a few times to really learn the training melodies she is using.

Sing It is the quick drop in mode, you just select a song and start singing! At the beginning, you choose your difficulty – Easy, Medium, Hard – and Normal or Karaoke Mode. In Karaoke Mode, the artist’s vocals are turned down. This is the single player mode and only features the one singing line. The game is scored using pitch detection. The closer you are to the correct pith, the higher your score will be. The game gives you feedback as you sing. As you sing correct notes and pitch, your style meter will begin to fill. Once completely filled, your Style level will increase and you earn more and more points. At the end of the song, you will receive your score. A fun bonus is the Encore button appears and will allow you to playback your last performance. During the Encore, you will have access to effects that you can toggle on or off during the performance.

Party Play is where things really heat up. You can choose the following modes: Duet, Competition, Performance, Team Play, Pass the Mic, Sing-Off, and Karaoke. Duet allows you to play with another player by singing alternate parts and even harmonies depending on the song and the difficulty. You can choose to pass the mic or have one mic per player. In Competition, you can play against friends where each of you sings the same song and the one with the highest score wins. If you have two mics, you can sing together and the one with the highest score wins. Performance mode can be played with one or more players where you sing along with the videos – with no on-screen help or scoring! This is for those who really know the songs! Team Play allows you to compete in separate teams; Pass the Mic is for up to six players to sing a part then pass it the mic to the next player; Sing-Off is the head to head mode for up to eight players . You can even split into two teams and compete. And last is the Karaoke mode with the artist’s vocals turned down.

Overall, the Disney Sing It: Party Hits is an accurate and fun karaoke video game. Our only complaint was that the actual sing screen was hard to follow, especially with two or more players. We had a hard time figuring out which mic was Player 1 or 2 and the song lyrics were set up so they were above the pitch board. The lyrics were more like a teleprompter than karaoke. If you don’t know the songs very well (like me), it made it difficult to “read” the music and get the words right. It would’ve been great to be able to modify that set up in the game’s options to have the lyrics appear on the pitch board. Other than that, the pitch detection was pretty spot on and I had no issues with vocal lag. This particular game is definitely aimed at the tween Disney crowd with a few extra songs like Owl City’s Fireflies and Paramore’s Ignorance and Brick by Boring Brick thrown into the mix. If you have the PS3 version, you will be able to download more songs in the future including the free Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) track – Ordinary Girl.

Disney Sing It: Party Hits is rated E for Everyone and is available now for the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 3 for $39.99.

Review of the PS3 version of Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction.

The Earth is in danger and only Ben Tennyson can save it! D3 Publisher has teamed up with developer, Papaya Studios, to bring a new video game based on the new Cartoon Network hit, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. For the first time, players will be able to use the new Ultimatrix which allows Ben to evolve his aliens forms into stronger and more powerful versions -into their “ultimate forms”. There is a lot of variety in the game as you not only play as Ben, but you can play as his alien forms – 10 normal aliens that are playable at any moment in the game and 5 ultimate ones that can only be played at key moments in the game.

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction is pretty linear, when you enter certain sections of a level, you get an overview shot of what you need to do and where you need to go. Should you forget where you are going or get turned around (doesn’t happen very often), you can also press the L1 button (PS3) and it will point the camera in the direction of your objective. There isn’t a lot to explore except a few nooks and crannies where you can find collectible Sumo cards – three in each level. The game has a great Quick Switch feature which will allow you to change into any one of the 4 different aliens on the fly. These are all chosen at the start of each level. The game will recommend three aliens as they will be needed to complete some of the puzzles in the level. It also chooses an optional alien that you can feel free to switch out for a more favored alien. You can actually choose ANY four aliens to start with but you may have to switch them out during the level for the alien who can complete the specified task.

The combat system is simple, you just hit the attack button to chain together combo attacks. You can block attacks as well and if you block at the right time, you will not only block the attack but you will counter it, knocking your enemy back or destroying their shield. The timing is easy as a green fist shows up and you have a second to press the block button. You need to get this move down as it will be crucial in most battles. The aliens all have four special attacks that can deliver more damage and affect more enemies than the regular attacks. Be aware of your combo meter as using the special attacks will drain this meter. No fear, the meter is filled by hitting enemies so if you are empty, just lay a few punches into your nearest enemy.

You can upgrade all of your alien forms as well and to do so, you will need to collect DNA. This can be collected by smashing objects within the levels. Most of the objects lying around the levels are breakable from boxes to vehicles so you will never have a hard time collecting DNA. There is health along with DNA in everything you break so replenishing your health is pretty easy as well. Breaking items is somewhat crucial in the game play as you will want to upgrade your aliens so their special attacks and attributes get stronger. You can upgrade your aliens at any time as well.

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction is primarily an action adventure game with some platforming and puzzle elements. You will need to climb ledges, move objects, and “fly” to get through the levels. Some things can only be done with specific aliens characters like using Spidermonkey to grapple or AmpFibian to supply power. Some aliens also jump better like Terraspin and Big Chill. Others can blow things up or freeze things. I had some issues with the control while performing some of the platforming elements in the game. Ledge jumping and double jumping caused me some issues as my timing was off which I am not 100% sure if it was due to user error or to mid-level control. I had more issues with the camera but it was mostly pretty decent. Sometimes the game would force the camera in a direction that I didn’t particularly care for so I felt like I was fighting it at times.

The game is featured in a more CGI fashion rather than a cell shaded or cartoon style like the TV show. The graphics and level design are decent – some portions do feel rather drab. You get to travel to several real world locales like Italy, France, Tokyo, and China. The artists and level designers did a great job of getting the feel of the locale across. Overall, the game was quite easy to play while still providing some challenge. Younger and more inexperienced gamers may find this game to be a challenge while seasoned gamers will be able to blow through the game with a lot more ease. Boss Battles were pretty easy as well but increased in difficulty as the game progressed. Some were far harder than others since you had to figure out what damages the boss as well as which alien could do the job. Some of the boss battles required the use of one particular alien.

There are save points throughout each level and in some cases, the game would check point so if you died, you didn’t always have to start at your last save or all the way at the beginning of the level. This wasn’t always too consistent as in some cases I would respawn quite far away or right where I died which was frustrating since I seemed to die in places where the respawn was far from where I died. Load times were very fast so you never had to wait more than a few seconds to resume game play. Most cut scenes are skipable as well.

I did experience some issues with the game that may have been issues with either the game, the game disc, or my PS3. I played through about half of the game in one sitting and had no background music (BGM). I went into the game’s options menu and the BGM was turned up and the music came on when I clicked on the volume (there is no mute function). When I returned to the game, the BGM was gone again. I quit the game and restarted it and still had issues. The next day, after the PS3 had been turned off, I had no issues with the BGM. The next issue was also on the first day and was with the video. After defeating the dragon boss in the Tokyo level, the screen went black. I could still hear sound and I could push buttons and hear that I was doing an attack. I quit and restarted and still experienced the black out at the same moment. Again, I tried it the next day (after the PS3 had been turned off) and I had no problems. The last issue I had occurred on the second day and was a freezing issue. I would die and restart a particular puzzle. Since I had already seen the cut scene (several times) I wanted to skip it. This would work two times and on the third try, the video would freeze while I could still hear sound and none of the buttons would work. This time I quit and restarted the PS3 and no longer had issues. I contacted D3 Publisher regarding this and no one else had been experiencing the same issues or hadn’t said anything to them about them if they were. It is still unclear if the problem is within the game, the disc, or my poor PS3. Needless to say, I was able to power through these issues and finish the game.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction is a fun game despite some of the issues with the camera, control, and PS3 issues that I experienced. While it was a bit on the easy side for me, others may find the game to be a challenge. It’s appropriate in difficulty for the audience that it is aimed for and still a lot of fun to play. There is also a Making-of Featurette and Concept Art featuring environmental and character art. There is no multiplayer or co-op featured in the game so replay value may be low for some. Fans of the TV series may want to play the game through again to get all the SUMO cards or to collect more DNA to fully upgrade every alien. Upon the game’s completion, you unlock Four Arms, giving fans another reason to play though the game a second time. The game also supports Trophies which are pretty easy to unlock even if you aren’t trying. I managed to unlock 60% of the Trophies on my first run through and really only tried for a few of them.

Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and up and is available now for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii for $39.95; for the Nintendo DS and PSP for $29.95; and for the PS2 for $19.95. Only the Xbox 360 and PS3 feature exclusive aliens to unlock – Four Arms on the PS3 and Rath on the Xbox 360.

There are two genres of video games that I rarely play – Real Time Strategy (RTS) games and licensed sports games. I say licensed because I do play sports games like SSX Tricky and racing games like Project Gotham. MotoGP 09/10 is a licensed motorcycle racing title that includes the 18 Grand Prix races across 14 countries as well as the bikes, teams, and rosters of the 2009 and soon, the 2010 MotoGP season. MotoGP 09/10 delivers a deep and involved motorcycle racing game that is a must have for MotoGP and racing fans everywhere.

There are several modes within the game – Career, Championship, Arcade, Time Trial, and Multiplayer. In Career Mode, you create your own rider and compete in the 125cc, 250cc, and 800cc circuits. You can customize your rider’s name, home track, rider number, and nationality as well as customize your helmet, uniform, and bike colors. There is a Tutorial Wildcard race to begin with and your career is launched. I felt that the tutorial was only helpful if you have prior knowledge about motorcycles and motorcycle racing. Since I have neither, the tips that were being shouted at me by my new Race Manager didn’t help me very much. Tips like “be careful not to wheelspin in the grass” had me yelling “Why?!?” at the TV. Your Race Manager will give you tips and encouragement throughout your career as well as in other modes. He is a jolly Scottish gent and there is no option to turn him off. Don’t get me wrong – my favorite accent in the world is a Scottish one – however, I felt like I was being yelled at by Shrek. What I found interesting is that as I started out in my career, I kind of sucked. I had a really hard time handling the bike, taking corners, and accelerating and braking at the appropriate times. My Race Manager kept telling me that I could used both my Front and my Rear brakes so I started to experiment with using each brake independently and together. As I progressed in my career, I was able to hire Press Officers who obtain Sponsorships, which earn me money for each race depending on what place I qualified for in the race and what place I took in the actual race. Later, I was able to hire Engineers who would research parts of my bike which in turn would enhance my bike’s performance. I finished my first 125cc career in 10th place overall…not too bad for a beginner but I still had no idea what I was doing and if I had really been playing the game “right”.

I started a new 125cc season and tried to really dig deep into the game’s inner mechanics. You race 18 different circuits within the season, hopefully placing high enough to earn you some cash. The cash goes towards paying your staff of Press Officers and Engineers and hopefully towards your own pocketbook. Standings are based on rider reputation which is determined by how well you do in the individual races. You earn reputation points by practicing and qualifying for a race as well as doing well in the actual race itself. You also earn points by overtaking other riders, slipstreaming other riders to overtake them, showboating by doing wheelies, endos, and burnouts as well as gesturing to the crowd or intimidating other riders. A dramatic finish will earn you points as well as getting clean section bonuses and clearing sections without making any mistakes. Being the fastest around the track will earn you a lap record and more rep points. While these are all very easy to achieve, points are deducted if you collide with other riders, crash your bike, or when you are overtaken by other riders. Deductions are going to happen so it’s up to you to rack up the points when you can. Throughout the race there are racing gates that if all are passed through, will earn you a perfect racing line and points toward your reputation. Every race will offer an optional objective like hitting an average speed, passing a particular rider, or sticking close to the racing line to name a few. Completing the objective will earn more points towards your reputation.

The racing line is a guide to where you should position yourself on the track and gives you hints as to when and where to apply the brakes. If the line is red, you will want to slow down and green implies you are going at a speed that can navigate the line. This guide is present by default and can be turned off in the settings menu, however, I found it helpful especially with the braking hints. I tend to keep the pedal to the metal – or my finger on the trigger – when I play ANY racing games. I only recently discovered the brakes in racing games. As you progress, you can hire more staff and get more active sponsorship slots to earn more money. I chose to keep one Press Officer and the rest of my staff as Engineers so that I could upgrade my bike faster. The research system isn’t quite as straight forward as I would have liked it to be but as I kept with it, I started completing certain parts of the bike and noticed a marked improvement in my racing. Suddenly, the game started to get serious and so was I. Not only was I practicing each and every race but I was also qualifying. Slowly, as I got more accustomed to the controls and how they worked and as the research improved the way my bike handled, I was qualifying in the top ten, top five, and towards the end of my second season, I was qualifying in first place for almost every race. I was colliding less, although the AI was a bit “rubberband” which made not colliding almost impossible. From the get go, the AI riders stick to the racing line like glue and you will do nothing but collide with them throughout the entire game. I had to make conscious effort to not collide with them but it came at a cost of placing behind one or two riders so I later concentrated on staying on the track, slipstreaming, and hitting all the racing gates to acquire more points. After a while though, I was never more than two spots from first and on a few occasions, I was in first place with more than a 5 second lead over the rider in second place. No need to worry about collisions when there aren’t any riders near you! This constant improvement was achieved both from playing the game a lot as well as trying to research the bike to improve its handling and overall performance. Once I understood all this, I got really into it – yelling for Norm to come and watch the amazing replays of my race and texting him with my overall standings. At the end of each race, you can watch a replay however, you cannot save the replay. This was disappointing as I wanted to show my first place race to my family at the next family get together. I ended up finishing in 2nd place overall in my second run though of the 125cc season circuit. Not bad…

As you do well in the races, you will also start to unlock riders and bikes to use in the Championship, Arcade, and Multiplayer modes. While you could use any class in the aforemention modes, you had to first complete the 125cc Career in order to begin your 250cc Career and complete the 250cc Career in order to play the 800cc Career. I think it would’ve been nicer to have all three open at the beginning but the bigger the engine, the more difficult the handling, so maybe it was a little like training wheels on a bike.

One of the coolest features in the game was the Second Chance option. If you crash your bike, take a turn too wide, or make any mistake that costs you your place, you can press the Select button which opens up the Second Chance controls, which allow you to rewind your actions and try again. It’s like having the Dagger of Time from The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time granting you the ability to go back in time and fix your mistakes. This comes at a cost to your reputation points so keep that in mind when you use it. I used this feature a lot. It’s only available in the actual race so if you crash while qualifying, you’re out of luck. You can even customize your bike before every race, choosing the tyre compound and even adjusting the ABS strength and traction control. I dabbled with this but didn’t really get it, so I just stuck with whatever worked for me.

Championship mode allows you to play a full season with one of the real world riders. You can select any bike class and any rider and bike that has been unlocked.

In Arcade mode, you have a set amount of time to complete as much of the race as you can. You earn time by performing maneuvers like Overtaking, Slipstreaming, Racing Line Gates, and Clean Sectors. Any extra time you have earned is added to your total time for the next racing round but if you do poorly, your time will go down.

Time Trial mode challenges you to set the best time record at a circuit. After you complete your first lap, you can have a Ghost Rider which follows the Racing Line you took on your previous lap. You can use this ghost rider to help improve you times. In addition, you can upload your ghosts for others to download and you can download other player’s racing lines and see where you stand with other players across the globe.

In Multiplayer mode, you can opt to play splitscreen local co-op or over the Playstation Network. MotoGP 09/10 supports 20-player online races however, due to either my connection or the game’s servers, I was unable to play online. Every time I tried, I got to the lobby and was able to choose my rider and then I would get booted out. This happened every time I tried, so unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try it out. I did get to play some splitscreen with a friend of mine who rides motorcycles. I happened to have kicked his butt, however, I had been playing the game for a while and that was his first time trying. In Splitscreen, you can create matches and play with friends. While it is fun to play with others, it’s not necessarily a game that one can just pick up a controller and play. There is a bit of a learning curve, but if you are willing to take a little time and lose a few races, it’ll be worth your while in the end.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed the game and it’s one of the first sports game that I have really put in some time into. I like racing games, so that helped a lot. While I thought the graphics could have been a little better, overall, they were pretty impressive and had a far draw distance so there was never a worry of a barricade popping up when you got closer to a turn. The crash graphics weren’t as impressive as I hoped but then again, I’m also not interested in realistic motorcycle crashes, not in this game anyways. I really enjoyed the game’s soundtrack which is made up of about 14 tracks. The music is in an upbeat Euro-beat style that I thought fit the game very well. I only wish that there was more variety. I would hear the same song over and over again in my longer racing sessions. There is no way to advance the tracks or build a custom playlist. A jukebox mode would’ve been great as well as the ability to use your own music tracks to create a custom soundtrack. In June, you will be able to download the 2010 season which will feature new bike classes, new tracks, and all the team and stat updates. This DLC will be available through free DLC packs. If you are a fan of motorcycles or racing games, you will want to play MotoGP 09/10. While it is not perfect, it provides a fun and rich racing experience you won’t want to miss.

MotoGP 09/10 is rated E for Everyone and is available now for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 for $49.99.

First off, it’s important that the reader know that I have played Final Fight front to back in the arcade several times. I used to have a machine at work and after hours we were allowed to play the game with company quarters. Even more important, I have never heard of Magic Sword. These are the two games featured in Final Fight: Double Impact. After playing both, I was surprised to find that I kind of enjoyed playing through both games, particularly Magic Sword. However, the only reason to replay the game is for Final Fight, and I can’t help feeling that a few issues really hold the game back from being a great value.

The game’s menu is set up as if you were in an arcade with two cabinets and you can choose between Final Fight or Magic Sword. The game is setup to play in cabinet mode to look as if you are playing the game in an arcade. While this is cool and nostalgic at first, those of us with HDTVs will opt to go into full screen mode. There are several options on how you can play the game including the classic mode with the original graphics. The music was redone and sounds fantastic. You can even choose to play the game with the original soundtrack. My preference was to play the game in full screen mode with the remastered soundtrack.

I will start with Magic Sword. Since I never heard of the arcade game, I cannot judge the emulation except to say that it seems in line with the graphics of its time (1990). The game is 2D side-scrolling/platforming action game. In the single player mode, you play a Barbarian that can find a follower of various classes ranging from wizard to ninja. The follower literally follows you around and shoots along with you, kind of like an Option power-up in Gradius. In the two-player mode, the second player is a Cleric. He too can have a follower. You are tasked with climbing a 50-floor tower to topple the Dark Lord and destroy or take his Black Orb.

The game is not as daunting as it seems, as climbing to the top of the tower can be done in less than an hour. However, the climb is full of chaos, as you and your followers are attacked with wave after wave of strange creatures and mini-boss battles. Its pretty difficult to manage the platforms while dodging and slicing up your foes. Fortunately, there are no one-hit kills or cliffs to fall off. While I would find it really challenging to beat this game without dying a ton of times, you do have unlimited continues to ensure you make it to the top.

The game controls well and does not allow for friendly fire, so at least you have that on your side. The two-button scheme makes it easy to grasp the basic controls. You can change your follower by freeing them from cells as you progress or by possessing certain items, however this system was pretty confusing.

It was a fun play-through with a friend, although it wouldn’t be the first game I would think to play when a buddy came by. I won’t say the same thing about Final Fight, though. Defeating this game with a friend is a lot of fun, and I’m sure that those who remember the arcade game will be filled with fond memories of stuffing quarters into the game just to see the end.

The emulation is really good. I would like to have the option to turn off friendly fire, one of the annoyances of the original game. The game also features in-game challenges which unlock items in the Vault like concept art and comic book pages. While the challenges bring a new depth to the game, the in-game trophy alerts block the action during the game and there is no way to turn it off in the settings. This completely pulls you out of the arcade experience, which is a bummer because everything else works so well. Don’t be fooled by the pause button, because it doesn’t pause the action. I didn’t realize this for quite a while however there are infinite continues in both games so its not that big of an issue.

One other complaint is that there is no way for a player to join in the middle of a single-player game. In other words, you have to set up a 2-player game before starting the game to allow another player to join. For a game that is showing off two great multiplayer arcade classics, that seems like a bad decision. You should be able to start a single-player game that allows for a second player to join anytime.

Still, Final Fight is one of the great classics from the early 90′s, and if you enjoyed then, you will probably still enjoy it even with a few annoyances such as the trophy pop-ups and setting up 2-player games. I recommend this game to anyone that loved the arcade game, or to anyone that enjoyed similar arcade experiences such as River City Ransom, Double-Dragon, or even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Final Fight Double Impact is rated T for Teen and is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 MS points and the PlayStation Network for $9.99.
